Riding the TTC is anything but enjoyable. And it’s going to get worse

My wife and I are infrequent users of the TTC, but now are faced with taking regular trips from Thornhill to the Fort York area to visit our new grandchild. This entails a subway trip from Finch to Union and then the 509 streetcar to Fleet Street and return the same way.

The other day, we took one such trip. The TTC was bustling because of the holiday weekend and Blue Jays game. We witnessed three incidents of harassment both on the subway and streetcar. All were non-violent but stressful, with one particularly so with an individual walking up and down the streetcar screaming obscenities at nobody in particular.

If we witness three incidents in one afternoon’s travel, how many are happening throughout the TTC network on a daily basis?

We have an enormous task ahead of us to ensure passenger safety and solve the widespread mental health, drug and homelessness issues that is prevalent in our city.

I fear it is unachievable and is only going to get worse.
